Ying Yang fish or Yin Yang fish (also called dead-and-alive fish) is a dish (mostly Ying Yang Fish and Carps) where the fish's body is deep-fried but still has a fresh and moving head. It is popular in China, but it originated in Taiwan where chefs use it to show customers how fresh the food is. Cooking of this dish is now prohibited in Taiwan.Animal rights activists have criticized the practice. On July 8, 2008 Taipei, Taiwan, Animal rights activists slammed a Taiwanese chef for serving a gourmet dish that included a deep fried fish with its head still twitching. The chef served the carp with its body deep-fried and covered with sweet and sour sauce. When the diners picked at the fresh meat with their chopsticks, they watched the fish mouth stir. It is now illegal to serve or cook fish in this fashion in Taiwan.

Seven Stories of Ying and Yang

The tone of 'Seven Stories of Ying and Yang' is what I would call 'Zen parable playfulness'. Each story presents a situation the Japanese village of Shimo must deal with; storms, mysteries, strange visitors . . . etc. The time is the Old Kingdom, meaning modern conveniences are not available to the children of the village. Ying and Yang help the children with magical spells, although this is not always apparent to the children. The sister fish talk while floating on the surface of their bowl in the library, but only the children can hear them. Throughout the stories there is a playfulness and humor. But underneath there is always some Zen lesson about life and the nature of the world being shown. The magic of Ying and Yang is hidden; yet is always revealing something to the children of the village.
